Annunciation by Antonello da Messina
During my recent visit to Palermo, I was very fortunate to see Messina’s Annunciation.
Virgin Annuciate by Antonello da Messina is a beautiful painting, the 7 or 8 minutes as I was standing in front of this portrait were timeless.
It is one of the few Annunciations in which the archangel Gabriel was not present in the painting, and with only the upper torso of the Virgin is visible, it looks very much a portrait rather than a religious painting.
The virgin’s gaze is as inscrutable as Mona Lisa’s, there is no apparent awe or surprise, and from her serene and profound countenance, her meditative state was not even quite disturbe
